Sheriff Byrd mistreats prisoner in 1983

Maples said that while he was being held in the Perry County Jail in 1983 he was denied medication and was otherwise mistreated by jail personnel. Maples was arrested for a disturbance at the home of his former wife. Federal Judge Henry Woods Monday dismissed for lack of evidence a complaint filed in December by Marvin Lyle Maples Sr., 43, a federal prisoner, against Perry County Sheriff Ray Byrd. Maples said that while he was being held in the Perry County Jail in 1983 he was denied medication and was otherwise mistreated by jail personnel. Maples was arrested for a disturbance at the home of his former wife. Among other things, he said he was left naked in his jail cell and suffered from exposure.
